When the Navy required an enhanced software certification process for the AN/SPS-48E radar set, the Virginia Beach Detachment of the NSWC (Naval Surface Warfare Center) PHD (Port Hueneme Division) selected Dot21 to provide this service.

Dot21's defined Independent Validation and Verification process was followed to analyze the existing certification process. In the Dot21 process, requirements tracking methodologies are used to determine the level of test coverage and to highlight testing deficiencies. This process also reveals any duplication in test efforts. Test evaluation criteria and analysis methods are examined to determine if savings can be realized through the automation of complex or repetitive tasks conducted by system analysts. Utilizing this process, Dot21 was able to reduce test overhead by 30% through the elimination of tests that did not increase the level of test coverage.

Dot21 developed a series of Matlab scripts to automate the analysis of data output from complex algorithms. These scripts allow the analysis of much greater amounts of data than manual methods. This allowed Dot21 to identify many software errors not previously identified. These benefits will be realized every time software certification is performed for the AN/SPS-48E radar set, eliminating 120 hours of engineering analysis.

Dot21 produced detailed Software Certification Procedures as a result of this analysis. Dot21 also produced documentation concerning fault isolation procedures that were added to the Technical Manual for the Radar Set AN/SPS-48E. These documents were vital in ensuring that the software certification process met the goal of verifying the reliability and conformance of the software to specifications. This task was crucial to ensuring that a robust system was delivered to the warfighter in support of the Surface Ship Combat Systems mission. These documents were produced under contract N63394-02-D-3106.
